Cross Country Poem

Cross Country

Bang!
The horn sounded like a train.
They set off like cheetahs after their prey.
Their hearts were pounding,
Foreheads sweating,
Legs stretching.

Strong, Focused, Fast, Determined.
They became elastic.
Around the bend.
Slipping over,
Mud on knees.

Stretching out,
Arms pumping.
One more lap.
Pouring around the bend,
Sprinting for the end.

Their legs were rocks,
Their lungs were burning,
Their arms were jelly.
They ignored the pain,
Ignore the pain.

Trees to the left,
Field to the right.
Marquee to the front.
The end!
GO! GO! GO! FASTER! GO!
Shouting from the sidelines,
Shouting from the concrete.

Finally.
Done.
They did it.
They've done it.
